In 2012 I began creating a farm on land just south of Hāna, a small town on the east side of the island of Maui.
The land is home to wide-open fields, huge banyan trees, and hundreds of feet of lava rock walls. Passionfruit and guava grow wild. The waters of the Pacific are just a few minutes walk away.
In my seven years of farming the land, I planted 120 food trees, representing 57 species/varieties. Pictured below you will see images from the farm of jackfruit, breadfruit, coffee, banana, lime, lemon, soursop, macadamia nut, mountain apple, papaya, guava, passionfruit, mango, avocado, pomelo, fig, and coconut. Planted but not pictured here: jaboticaba, longan, mamay sapote, black sapote, malabar chestnut, lychee, rollinia deliciosa, kumquat, tangelo, grapefruit, orange, starfruit, pomegranate, ice cream bean, sweet tamarind, kaffir lime, allspice, and miracle berry.
In 2019 I passed the farm to its next stewards. I will remain forever grateful to this land and to all who joined me on the journey to care for it. Ua Mau ke Ia o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono: The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness.
